Gardening Bath

This Gardening Bath was SO FUN and all Rosie's idea!  While we were perusing the Dollar Tree Rosie noticed all the gardening stuff they just put out.  She got really excited and started talking about how she wanted to plant flowers and grow things.  It isn't even February here yet so we won't be gardening outside for a bit but Rosie could surely do some gardening in the bath!

She had so much fun with this bath time!  She played so long I had to drain the cold water and refill the tub. This bath was fairly simple to set up too.  We already had most of the items needed on hand.  However, if you don't have something and would like to recreate this bath ALL of the materials can be purchased from The Dollar Tree!
I decorated the tub with a few of the flowers the girls use for pretend play.  I added neon green food coloring to the bath as I filled the tub.  I also added a few drops of regular green to get the exact color I wanted.  I grabbed a shovel, gardening gloves, imitation flowers, and starter pots from our basement as well as a few seed packets we had left over from last years gardening.

The foam cut outs covering the walls were borrowed from other bath times.
The only other thing this bath needed was dirt.  So, I craftily whipped up a batch of bath safe dirt dough for tub time sensory play!

The dirt recipe I created is so simple and easy to make!  It isn't just for bath time either- it is perfect for play out of the bath too!  Think construction sites, gardening, mud pies, and more! It washes right down the drain too, making it great for tub time.

All you need is baking soda, black food coloring (found in baking aisle), and a bit of water.  It feels almost exactly like real dirt!  Slowly add water until the baking soda is slightly moist   You want it to be damp and moldable but not wet.  If you add to much water it will turn to liquid which is actually a good thing for after the play but not before!  Baking soda dissolves in water making it 100% tub time safe.  It won't clog the drains and will actually clean them!

First she explored all the materials in the tub!  She filled and dumped, made floating flower art, and made rain!

Then I brought out the dirt so Rosie could get busy planting flowers!  She was so excited!

She dug in the dirt

After Rosie had her fill of gardening she had a blast splashing around in the Spring green water!

Rosie played in her gardening bath for a long time.  During the entire bath only a little dirt actually made it into the bath and it dissolved and turned to a cloudy liquid.    The rest of the dirt I dumped back into the yellow tub to use for a bath the next day.  What do you think we did with our bath dirt this time?
